MY BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY
James Higgins Fractional CEO consultant

I’m James - a former banker turned entrepreneur, father, and full-time optimist with a deep love for building things that matter.

I grew up in the suburbs of Birmingham, where I could walk to school, play until the sun went down, and live offline before everything became digital. From a young age, I was fascinated by people, nature, and how the world worked.

I was always generous, always asking questions, always learning - just not always in a classroom.

Traditional education never fit.

But life? Life was the ultimate playground.

I was a gifted mathematician, a decent athlete, and eventually - an excellent poker player.

Whilst studying economics at University of Leeds, I played semi-professionally, using the winnings to travel the world and chase freedom.

At one point, I almost opened a dive shop on a Thai beach. Instead, I listened to reason, studied accounting, and spent ten years in UK banking and consulting. I hated it. But it shaped me.

I learned how to simplify complexity, navigate difficult people, and stay calm under pressure.

I left with a powerful skill set - and a burning desire to create something of my own.

Today, I build and scale meaningful businesses like Ethical Bedding, Moongreens, and Origins - each one grounded in purpose, performance, and sustainability. I help other founders do the same through In Bed With James, a platform for business consulting, creative strategy, and real-talk about what it means to live well and lead well.

My life blends:

Stoicism (for resilience)
Buddhism (for awareness)
Nature (as the greatest healer and teacher)

I value freedom, truth, and justice, and I don’t work with egos or assholes.

I’m a dad, a digital nomad, and a guy who’s trying to leave the world better than he found it - with a few laughs, a few businesses, and hopefully some real impact along the way.

If my work inspires even one person to live a little better, I’m winning.

FAQs
What kind of businesses do you work with?

I partner with founder-led businesses doing £1M–£50M+ in revenue who want to scale with intention. You need to be past product-market fit, profitable (or close), and hungry for a serious exit or transformation. I don’t do vanity projects.

What’s your consulting structure?

There are three main ways to work with me:

• Fit Test - £250 for 30 mins (refunded if we proceed).

• 1-Hour Deep Dive - £1,500 flat. One hour, high-impact.

• Fractional CEO / 90-Day Sprint - £20K/month or £75–£100K/quarter. Typically a hybrid model (Fee + Equity) with clear deliverables and defined outcomes.

What is the Earth, Wind, Fire, Water framework?

It’s my elemental approach to diagnosing and scaling businesses:

• Earth (Foundations): Brand, strategy, team, core operations.

• Wind (Revenue): Acquisition, sales funnels, expansion.

• Fire (Efficiency): Burn rate, margin structure, automation.

• Water (Sustainability): Resource allocation, resilience, future-proofing.

Every engagement I take on uses this structure - whether you’re a D2C brand, service business, or something niche. It keeps things simple, smart, and effective.

Do you ever work purely for equity?

Rarely. Only in supernormal situations with massive upside potential, where I truly believe in the founder and business. Otherwise, I prefer a hybrid of fee + equity, so we’re both invested and moving fast.

What’s the TOM Diagram?

TOM = Target Operating Model. It’s a visual of how your business should actually run - from people to processes to profit levers. I’ll build or rewire your TOM during most engagements, especially in the first 30 days of any Sprint or Fractional role.

What’s your availability like?

I keep my client base lean. No more than 2–3 businesses at a time, so you get the attention and speed you’re paying for. I’m not here to sell time - I’m here to create leverage.

Can I book you to speak?

Yes. I do select keynote talks and panels around entrepreneurship, sustainable business, and founder psychology. You can book via this link or reach out for custom sessions.
